This course is a joint programme offered by Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences. The programme conveys the necessary procedural and scientific expertise for effectively dealing with disaster situations. To this end, on the one hand the students come to grips with, among other things, basic aspects of mathematics, physics, fluid mechanics, process engineering and the dispersal of pollutants. On the other hand, they acquire skills in the fields of fire safety, disaster management and civil defence, environmental protection, emission control, water pollution control, safety management, occupational and workplace safety, psychosocial aspects of hazard prevention, preventative structural fire safety, electrical safety, determining the cause of fires and risk analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on leadership, management, emergency planning, psychology and law.

Specialists in safety management and hazard defence in industry, as well as the fire service; fire safety, disaster management and environmental protection for specialist federal, state and local agencies as well as for the police; assessors for insurance companies, banks and in construction; developers or manufacturers of fire prevention and safety equipment.

More information
This course is generally divided into basic scientific and technical studies, a semester-long practical placement, two semesters of specialisation and one semester to produce the Bachelor’s thesis. The course structure is consecutive: after the Bachelor’s degree, a further Master’s degree course is offered.
