Ethics

Compliance with ethical principles is central to research projects in Horizon 2020.
It is ensured by the Ethics Appraisal Procedure, which consists of the following steps:

1. Ethics Self-Assessment:
The Applicant completes the Ethical Issues Table (Section 4 Proposal Submission Form).

2) Ethics Pre-Screening / Screening:
Conducted during the evaluation of the application by an expert panel based on the information provided in the application.

3) Ethics Assessment:
If ethically relevant points turn up in the screening, a more detailed analysis is carried out by an expert panel. An ethics assessment is always performed when human embryonic stem cells are the subject of research in the planned project.

4) Ethics Check / Audit:
Performed during project implementation on the basis of  Deliverables as well as in conversations. Applies to research activities that have already been considered ethically relevant in the Ethics Assessment.

The results of the Ethics Review may be part of the contractual agreements. In the case of grave disregard of ethical criteria, an application may be rejected or the funding of an ongoing project may be discontinued.
